Columbia Museum of Art, Main & Hampton Streets, Columbia. Lipscomb Family Galleries, Jan. 27 - June 8 - “Excavating Egypt: Great Discoveries from the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology”. This major exhibition offers a fascinating view into the lives of both royal and average Egyptians with ancient objects and artwork from the earliest periods of Egyptian history to the late Roman period. Through Apr. 13 - “Paper Pleasures: Highlights from the Collection”. This installation highlights old master to 19th century prints, featuring artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Odilon Redon. BB&T Gallery, Through Apr. 6 - “The Last Frontier of the Cotton Farmer: The Works of Merritt Mauzey”. This installation highlights Merritt Mauzey’s lithographs showing the life of Southern farmers and crop workers. Hours: Wed., Thur., & Sat., 10am-5pm; Fri., 10am-9pm, & Sun., 1-5pm. McKissick Museum, University of South Carolina, USC Horseshoe, Columbia. Jan. 26 - Apr. 26 - “Grandeur Saved: Photographs of the Aiken-Rhett House by Michael Eastman”. The exhibit features 16 large-scale, color photographs of the Aiken-Rhett House in historic Charleston, SC, by this renowned contemporary photographer. Ongoing - “Highlights from the Permanent Collections of McKissick Museum”. Permanent - “Baruch Silver Collection,” a collection of the Baruch family silver. “The Laurence L. Smith Mineral Collection,” a collection of hundreds of minerals from throughout the world. Long-term - “University of South Carolina: Pranks and Pundits From the First One Hundred Years,” an exhibition about the founding and evolution of the university. SC State Museum, 301 Gervais Street, Columbia. Lipscomb Gallery (first floor), Through Mar. 23 - “The Mark B. Coplan Collection of Art at the SC State Museum,” featuring a large collection of South Carolina art assembled by one of the Palmetto State’s most passionate collectors. The compilation of 110 pieces, gathered over about 20 years by noted art enthusiast Mark Coplan and acquired by the museum in 2006, includes pottery, paintings, wood carvings, drawings, photography, printmaking, sculpture and more by artists such as Leo Twiggs, Corrie McCallum, Alfred Hutty, Ed Lewandowski, Carl Blair, Preston Orr, Cecil Williams, Beverly Buchanan, Mike Williams, Robert Courtright and others. The Crescent Café, second floor mezzanine of the Museum. The house menu offers a variety of baked goods, juices, coffee, hot chocolate and tea. Lunchtime offerings include deli sandwiches and alternating daily soups, as well as grilled chicken salads and sandwiches.
