Unwelcome at MOES!!!!!!!

By Todd Morehead

Having taken one issue off in January and then “calling it in,” as they say, with a 20 page, commentary-heavy paper last issue, we finally feel rested around here and are ready to come out swinging in 2008. We’d like to dedicate this issue to our friends at Al-Jazeera and to those journalists at home and abroad who suffer for their craft.

Hello CPRC, Goodbye former office

We’d also like to welcome the Carolina Peace Resource Center to our former office space. The all night layout sessions in those hallowed halls have become the stuff of legend in some circles; community leaders often enduring interviews with reporters with a flying ceramic Jesus staring from the corner, an exhausted City Paper staffer or two snoring in a heap in the middle of the floor. The publisher used to file emergency changes of underwear in the “U” file in the sales cabinet, so any fixtures we may have left behind should be thoroughly sandblasted.

The Twilight Zone

Speaking of the old days and renegade journalists, we have to give a pat on the back to City Paper founding editor and longtime partner in crime, Corey Hutchins, for the kick-ass cover story he wrote about Gov. Sanford for the Free Times last week. Many involved with this paper, past and present, got our start at Free Times and though we’ve given them a fair share of ribbing over the years, all of us here have a special place for the old gal in our cold black hearts. Sure, for CCP staff, reading Corey’s article and catching a familiar career-ending accusation or witty turn of phrase evoked the same feeling as a guy forced to watch his wife in bed with another man, it was still great to see the Free Times in her old form with that issue. Kudos, guys.

Unwelcome at Moe’s!

City Paper was recently banned from all Moe’s locations. For those readers who vote with their wallets, we highly recommend the Rojo Chicken at Yo Burrito. Also, El Burrito in Five Points announced they will now carry our paper, much to the relief of City Paper staffers who have greatly missed their food these past couple of years.

New stuff on the way in 2008

We have a exciting things lined up for the coming year. For one, we started a sister paper in Asheville last October. We are thrilled that veteran journalist Cecil Bothwell, formerly of the Mountain Xpress, has taken over the news desk for Asheville City Paper. Our launch got plenty of press up there and so far we seem to be well received. Back here in Columbia, we’ve introduced a new regional news briefs section, plenty of new playthings on our Web site and will bring back Bum of the Week soon. We’ve given the Gov. some time off from the horoscopes, but fans of bizarre humor and general degenerates fear not: we have plenty of stuff lined up for the coming months.

Until next issue!
