Pimp C, Rest In Peace (1973 – 2007)

Peace and blessings to all of you out there reading this. Definitely thank you for all of the comments and support. Be sure to stay tuned, 2008 is right around the corner and you don’t wanna miss an issue. Today I greet y’all with a heavy heart, as most of you may know, Pimp C, one of Hip Hop’s most respected, has passed away.

Born Chad Butler (1973) in Port Arthur, TX, Pimp C was one of a few Hip Hop pioneers still relevant today. Born to a gospel singing school teacher (mother) and a classy trumpet player (father), Pimp C had the love, talent and understanding of music flowing in his veins. Able to read & write music, play instruments, master samplers and drum machines, and intertwining all of that into his own form of Hip Hop, Pimp C was definitely a rarity. Web site, TMZ, states, “Outside of his father, the 33-year old rapper’s influences varied, ranging from Bobby Bland, Jimmy McGriff, the 1960’s Motown artists to Run DMC. Butler met his inseparable partner Bernard “Bun B” Freeman in high school where they formed UGK-Underground Kingz.”

Texas has bred some of the greatest and most successful artists ever to pick up a microphone, write a rhyme, or scratch on turntables. From the legendary DJ Screw (R.I.P.) and The Geto Boys (Scarface, Willie D, and Bushwick Bill), to Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Devinn the Dude, and the entire new batch of talent, Texas has a huge chapter in Hip Hop history. In 1992, the Underground Kingz signed to Jive Records and went on release eight albums. In 2007, their self-titled album, UGK (Underground Kingz), debuted at number in pop charts. According to the New York Times, UGK “helped inspire a generation of Southern hip-hop stars, from OutKast to Lil Wayne.”

Found dead on December 4 in his room at the Mondrian Hotel in Hollywood, Calif., Pimp C was said to have died of natural causes. Responding to an early morning 911 call, the Los Angeles County Fire Department found him on the bed, unresponsive to their attempts to revive him. At press time, no official autopsy has been reported and a full investigation is still underway.

Jive Records President, Barry Weiss, had this to say, “It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad “Pimp C” Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I’ve known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family.”

UGK has collaborated with some of the finest Soul, Rock, Reggae, and Hip Hop artists. Ranging from Too Short, Scarface, Dizzee Rascal, Letoya, Young Buck, Britney Spears, Lil Kim, T.I., Jermaine Dupri, OutKast, Solomon Burke, and a whole host more. UGK has a track record like very few in the game. Garnering the first number 1 record (Underground Kingz-2007) after debuting in 1988, UGK has definitely faced some stress and strife. From Pimp C’s incarceration and leaked albums to the ever-constant lack of support form their label, UGK has engaged, encouraged and endured. Whenever people debate about who were some of the greatest Hip Hop duos…Run-DMC (JMJ R.I.P.), EPMD, Tha Dogg Pound, Das Efx, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Clipse, Smif & Wessun, and OutKast will probably be mentioned, but UGK-The Underground Kingz will definitely be.
